At Purpose Driven Education, our professional learning approach is grounded in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) and informed by our Grow. Lead. Learn. framework. This framework supports teachers to embed the standards into their professional practice encouraging purposeful growth, reflective leadership, and continuous improvement across all career stages.
As a teacher, you are already familiar with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). You may have engaged with them during your training, and you certainly need them to gain full accreditation as a Proficient teacher.
At Purpose Driven Education, we believe the Standards are more than a compliance tool—they are a framework for growth, reflection, and professional purpose. When teachers take ownership of the Standards, they unlock their true value. The most effective approach is to:
Select a few Standards to set intentional goals for the year.
Regularly review the Standards as a whole, ensuring steady growth across all areas without becoming overwhelmed.
This deliberate practice not only strengthens your teaching but also sets you up for leadership opportunities. By working confidently at the Proficient stage, you will find it easier and more natural to transition into the Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) stages, or to align with the Professional Standards for Middle Leaders.
Your next step as a Purpose Driven Educator: Choose two or three Standards to focus on this term, set clear actions against them, and begin collecting evidence of your growth. By doing so, you’re not just meeting requirements—you’re actively building the foundation for future leadership.
Purpose Driven Education is not affiliated with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and has not contributed to the development of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
These standards are a national, publicly available framework and are used within our programs to support teacher development and reflective practice. We respectfully acknowledge their value and see them as essential to the work we do in helping educators grow, lead, and learn.
